Kyoto City Nishikyogoku Comprehensive Sports Park (京都市西京極総合運動公園)

Kyoto City Nishikyogoku Comprehensive Sports Park is a regional sports park, which is located in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. This 19.1-ha park includes the Kyoto Nishikyogoku Baseball Stadium, Kyoto Nishikyogoku Athletic Stadium, Kyoto Nishi-Kyogoku Athletic Park supplementary field, Kyoto Aquarena (swimming pool in summer; skating rink in winter), Kyoto City Gymnasium and archery ground and other facilities.

History

Kyoto City Nishikyogoku Comprehensive Sports Park was constructed as a sports field in Kyoto City to celebrate the marriage of Togu (Emperor Showa), in 1930.

Taking advantage of Kyoto Kokutai (National Sports Festival) held in 1988, the overall renovation of this park had started in 1982 and its redevelopment was completed in 1989.

After the stands of Kyoto Nishikyogoku Athletic Stadium were renovated in time for Kyoto Purple Sanga's (present Kyoto Sanga F.C.) promotion for the Japan Professional Football League in 1995, this Stadium has been used as Sanga's home stadium.

Although Kyoto Aquarena was removed at the time of overall renovation in 1982, its construction was started in 1999 and was completed in July, 2002.
